Good evening, Jack Reynolds checking in. February 13 always takes me back to 1970, when a Friday-the-13th record hit the racks and kids swore music would never sound the same. And wait till you see that big white Cadillac with those sky-high fins, my brother and I used to stare at cars like that in store windows. Brings it all back, doesn’t it?

#1 · This Date Back Then
A quick hop back to one real moment from the golden years that had folks talking.
Black Sabbath’s First Album Lands on Friday the 13th
Black Sabbath’s First Album Lands on Friday the 13th

On February 13, 1970, Black Sabbath put their first record in the racks, and the whole rock world got heavier overnight. It climbed to No. 8 in the U.K. and later sold about a million copies. My brother would have played it too loud. Click for the track list and the story behind that Friday-the-13th release.

#2 · The Car We All Wanted
Slip back into the driver’s seat of the American machines we circled in the brochures.
1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz in White
1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz in White

1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz in white was the kind of convertible that made a man stand up straighter. It cost a jaw-dropping $7,401 new, only 1,320 were built, and it packed 345 horsepower. This one sold for $138,600 at auction. My wife swears those fins looked like rocket ships. Click for the photos and the option rundown.

#3 · Corner of America
One small patch of town that shows how everyday America grew up around us.

Nicollet Avenue Between 3rd and 4th, Minneapolis, 1960

Nicollet Avenue between 3rd and 4th in Minneapolis looked worn in the summer of 1960, with big billboards and bargain shops doing their best. The Star Tribune tried to photograph every corner that summer. Today that block is crowned by thirty floors of modern housing. My wife and I would have window-shopped. Click for photos and the map.

A commercial or print ad whose lines still pop into your head at the oddest times.
Miss Clairol 1957, “Does She, or Doesn’t She?”
Miss Clairol 1957, “Does She, or Doesn’t She?”

“Does she, or doesn’t she?” landed in 1957 and made hair color sound as normal as Sunday supper. Back then only 1 in 15 women colored their hair, and Clairol’s sales later jumped about fourfold. My wife still repeats, “Only her hairdresser knows.” Click to watch the full spot and hear the line again.

#6 · Your Memory
A shared moment from you, the reader that could have come from any of our family albums.

Donna’s Front-Yard Lemonade Stand, 1972

Tonight’s ‘Your Memory’ comes from Donna in Virginia, thinking back to a hot July afternoon in 1972. She and her sister nailed together a little stand from spare boards, and sold lemonade for a dime a cup. Dad always said honest work tastes sweet. She remembers the ice clinking and the neighborhood waving as they passed.

#7 · Nightcap Quote
One last quote from a familiar voice to end the night right.
Paul Harvey on Keeping Perspective
Paul Harvey on Keeping Perspective

Tonight’s Quote comes from Paul Harvey, who reminded us that “In times like these, it helps to recall that there have always been times like these.” That line steadies a man. My dad always said you keep your head, then you keep your home. If you want to learn more about him here, his story is worth a read.

See you tomorrow. Same time, same station.
